History of the island

Amelia Island has a rich and varied history, with eight different national flags having flown over the island. The island has been ruled by the French, Spanish, British, Floridian/Patriot, Green Cross, Mexican, Confederate, and the United States.

The first inhabitants of the island were the Timucua Native Americans, who settled on the island around 1000 AD and called it Napoyca. They remained on the island until the early 1700s. In 1562, French explorer Jean Ribault became the first recorded European visitor to the island, naming it Isle de Mai. In 1565, Spanish forces led by Pedro Menendez de Aviles drove out the French and killed Ribault and 350 French colonists. The Spanish established the Santa María de Sena mission on the island in 1573, renaming it Isla de Santa María.

In 1680, British raids on St. Catherines Island, Georgia, led to the Christian Guale Indians abandoning their mission and relocating to Spanish missions on Isla de Santa María.
