Family-Friendly Fun: Go Tubing Down the Yampa River in Steamboat Springs

When looking for family-friendly activities in Steamboat Springs, one cannot miss out on tubing down the Yampa River. This quintessential summer experience will definitely bring an adrenaline rush and laughter to everyone in your group.

The Yampa River is the only major river in Colorado that still flows freely without any dam disturbance. Its clear and refreshing water makes it an ideal spot for tubing. There are a few spots along the river where the water is shallow enough for small children to stand and splash around, and deeper pools for those who crave a little more excitement.

One of the best starting points for tubing is Fetcher Park. Here you can rent tubes and life jackets from local shops, and then enter the river from a designated spot. The river has a gentle current and takes about an hour to finish the trip. Along the way, you will come across calm stretches of water and some small rapids, which will ensure a fun and refreshing experience.

It is essential to pack snacks, drinks, sunscreen, water shoes, and hats for this activity. Additionally, it is strongly recommended to wear water-resistant shoes to avoid slipping on the river rocks.

If tubing is not enough for your family, consider pairing it with other activities such as fishing, hiking, or a picnic. There are plenty of great spots where you can set up a picnic and enjoy the stunning views of the Yampa River.

Finally, it is crucial to take note of the weather forecast and river conditions before jumping into the river. Tubing is best enjoyed when the water temperature is warm and the river flow is steady. During the rainy season, the river can become dangerous, and it is essential to heed the local warnings for your safety.

Overall, tubing down the Yampa River is a fantastic family activity in Steamboat Springs. It's an excellent way to explore the natural beauty of the area, enjoy the Colorado sunshine, and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

Hike to Fish Creek Falls

Hike
Source: Steamboat Chamber

If you're visiting Steamboat Springs as a family, you might be looking for fun outdoor activities that everyone can enjoy together. One great option is hiking to Fish Creek Falls, a towering waterfall that's located just a few miles outside of town. Here's what you need to know about planning a hike to Fish Creek Falls with your family.

First of all, it's important to note that the hike to Fish Creek Falls can be fairly strenuous. While the trail is well-maintained and not particularly steep, the high altitude (Steamboat Springs sits at over 6,700 feet above sea level) can make it more challenging than you might expect. Additionally, the trailhead is located in a parking lot that can get quite busy, so plan to arrive early if you want to avoid the crowds.

Assuming you're up for the challenge, the hike itself is truly breathtaking. You'll wind through forests of aspen and pine, taking in the stunning views of the Yampa Valley along the way. As you get closer to the falls, you'll hear the roar of the water and feel the mist on your face. When you reach the falls themselves, you'll be treated to an awe-inspiring sight: a 280-foot cascade of water plummeting into a pool below.

One thing to note is that the trail to Fish Creek Falls is not stroller-friendly. If you're hiking with young children, you'll want to bring a baby carrier or backpack to carry them in. You'll also want to make sure that everyone in your group is wearing sturdy, supportive footwear–sneakers or hiking boots are a must.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that the area around Fish Creek Falls is home to a variety of wildlife, including moose, deer, and black bears. Make sure that you're prepared to encounter wildlife by carrying bear spray and keeping a safe distance from any animals you may see.

All in all, hiking to Fish Creek Falls is an unforgettable experience that's perfect for families who love the outdoors. Whether you're seasoned hikers or just starting out, this trail is one that you won't want to miss during your time in Steamboat Springs.
