His father had adopted two feral horses, and when they took the horses to the vet to be castrated, the veterinarian, Dr. Saunders, offered to let Bottoms castrate one of the horses under his supervision. After that, Bottoms spent the next five years accompanying Saunders on calls and gaining hundreds of hours of experience.

Bottoms was in the top three percent of his high school class and was accepted into the pre-vet program at California Polytechnic State University, graduating in 2000. He went on to attend veterinary school at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada. After graduating, he practiced in Santa Cruz, California, and volunteered with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
