Walk the Historic District of Annapolis

Walk
Source: www.waysideinnmd.com

If you're craving a walking tour with a glimpse of America's past, then Anne Arundel County is the place to be. And what better way to get a sense of the history than walking in the Historic District of Annapolis.

Annapolis has been around since colonial times and has played a significant role in American history. It was once the capital of the United States before it was moved to Washington D.C. in 1800. The city was also a hub of the slave trade in the Chesapeake Bay region. Today, it's a historic city that is known for its preservation of its colonial-era architecture.

Start your walking tour from the Maryland State House, which has been the seat of Maryland's government since colonial times. Take a moment to reflect on the fact that this building is the oldest statehouse still in use in the country.

From the State House, stroll down State Circle, which has some of the city's best examples of Georgian architecture. The tour will take you past several important landmarks like the Governor's Mansion, the Ward One Residents Association, the year-round Anne Arundel County Farmers Market, and the historic St. Anne's Episcopal Church.

Next, take a quick walk down Main Street, and then wander into one of the numerous side streets to get a better sense of the historic homes in the Annapolis Historic District. You may even spot a plaque on some of the historic homes, which share the stories and families who once lived there.

Wrap up your tour by strolling down City Dock, a charming waterside area that features a historic brick city dock and a picturesque view of the Chesapeake Bay. The dock used to be a busy place where ships unloaded goods, including tobacco and slaves.

Annapolis's Historic District is always open, but we recommend taking a stroll in the fall when the trees turn vibrant golds and oranges. And don't forget to bring your camera.

Walking the Historic District of Annapolis is a great way to experience the historical charm of Anne Arundel County. So, put on some comfortable shoes and take a step back in time.
