The first thing that caught my attention, driving into the city were the stunning saguaro cacti standing tall in the dry desert. It was mesmerizing to see the cacti forests stretching out for miles on end. I got to learn that the towering saguaro cacti grow exclusively in the Sonoran Desert, which includes Tucson.

My first tip is, of course, to explore nature. The Saguaro National Park has two locations, and both are worth a visit. Witnessing the sunset or sunrise amidst the saguaro cacti forest is an unforgettable memory. There are also several hiking trails that you can take, guided or self-guided, depending on your preference. We decided to hike the Douglas Spring Trail, which offered a moderate level of difficulty and meant we could experience the unique natural beauty of the Sonoran desert.

Another tip is to visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which is a perfect blend of a zoo, botanical garden, and natural history museum. The museum is spread over 97 acres, and we were thrilled to see various animals and plants in their natural habitats. The museum strives to teach and promote conservation and sustainable living, and is an excellent educational experience for adults and children alike.

We also took time to explore downtown Tucson, a vibrant area with excellent bars, restaurants, and live music venues. My personal favorite is the Hotel Congress. It is an iconic hotel that dates back to the early 1900s and maintains its vintage charm. Take a tour of the historic property and enjoy the excellent food and live music.

There are some fun and slightly quirky things you can do in Tucson that are sure to make your trip unforgettable. One such thing is visiting the International Wildlife Museum, where you can see over 400 species of animals from around the world. We also visited the Pima Air & Space Museum and were amazed by the collection of aircraft from different eras.

The city of Phoenix, Arizona is a lovely place to visit throughout the year, but December in particular holds a different type of charm that is worth experiencing. Although the temperatures can get a little chilly, with the average high being around 65°F and the low dropping to 47°F, the city makes up for it with a plethora of activities and events specifically tailored to the season. Here are some tips and suggestions to make the most of your visit.

Where to go: Phoenix has a number of attractions to offer, but during December, certain places take on a special quality. The Desert Botanical Garden, for example, is magical during the holiday season with its Las Noches de Las Luminarias event. Thousands of luminarias, also called paper lanterns, light up the night along garden trails, creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Another option is the Phoenix ZooLights experience, where the zoo transforms into a winter wonderland with millions of lights, 3D lantern shows, and a synchronized music-and-light display. Both events require ticket purchases, so be sure to plan accordingly.

When to go: Arizona has fairly predictable weather patterns, so be sure to check the weather before deciding which activities to do or what to wear. Also, keep in mind that weekends are typically more crowded, so if you prefer fewer crowds, try to plan your visit on a weekday. If you can, try to time your visit to coincide with special events, such as the Merry Main Street festival (which offers a holiday ice rink, interactive light displays and extended shopping hours) or the Fiesta Bowl (one of the top college football games of the year).

What to do: Beyond the attractions mentioned above, there are plenty of other things to do in Phoenix in December. Consider taking a hike, as the temperatures are comfortable enough to allow for some outdoor exploring. Camelback Mountain is a popular option, with two different trails, both offering stunning views of the surrounding area. You might also consider visiting museums or attending concerts, as many of them offer holiday-themed exhibits and shows during the season.

How to get around: Phoenix is a sprawling city, so having your own vehicle can be helpful, although it's not entirely necessary. The Valley Metro rail system and buses are inexpensive and efficient, and there are also plenty of ride-sharing services available. If you do plan to drive, be sure to download a GPS app or program to help navigate the city's web of highways and boulevards.

Why visit Phoenix in December: Phoenix in December offers a unique opportunity to experience the holidays in a different and unforgettable way. Whether it's taking in the beauty of the luminarias at the botanical garden, strolling through the zoo's twinkling light displays, or participating in festive events, there's a sense of warmth and cheer in the air that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Additionally, the mild weather means you won't be bundled into a parka and boots, but still able to enjoy the outdoors.

In conclusion, December is an excellent time to visit Phoenix, Arizona. There's no shortage of holiday activities and events, and the mild weather makes it all the more pleasant. Whether you're interested in hiking, sightseeing, or simply experiencing the holiday cheer, you're bound to find something to enjoy. Plus, there are plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants in town where you can warm up with a hot drink or a delicious meal.
Thank you for your comment! I completely agree, Sedona is a must-visit destination in December. The red rocks against the clear blue skies are truly breathtaking. I also loved exploring the hiking trails and immersing myself in the peaceful atmosphere of the area. Catching a sunrise or sunset at Cathedral Rock was definitely a magical experience. And yes, the cozy cafes and restaurants in town were a perfect way to warm up and enjoy a hot drink or a delicious meal. Overall, Sedona in December is a beautiful and serene getaway.

One of my favorite things to do in Arizona in December 2016 was to go stargazing in the desert. The lack of light pollution in certain areas of the state makes for incredible views of the night sky. I joined a guided tour and got to see constellations, planets, and even spotted a shooting star. It was such a unique experience and I felt a deep connection with nature. If you're a fan of astronomy or simply want to witness the beauty of the night sky, I highly recommend this activity.
