Hike the Ewoldsen Trail

Hike
Source: thelovelinessblog.com

If you’re planning a family trip to Big Sur, one of the most rewarding activities for both parents and children is hiking the Ewoldsen Trail. This moderate hike through dramatic scenery offers more than just physical exercise - it provides a wonderful opportunity to bond with your family while exploring the natural and cultural history of Big Sur.

Located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, the Ewoldsen Trail is a 4.5-mile loop that takes about three hours to complete. The trailhead is easily accessible from Highway 1, and the parking lot we suggest for families is on the left (west) side of the highway, about 35 miles south of Carmel.

As you start the hike, the trail runs through a shady redwood grove, with the sound of McWay Creek echoing in the background. From there, it ascends to a ridge that provides views of the Pacific Ocean, where you can see and hear the waves crash on the rocks below. The trail then descends to the floor of Partington Canyon, with ferns, mosses, and wildflowers flourishing alongside bigleaf maples and a gently flowing stream.

One of the most exciting features of the Ewoldsen Trail is the opportunity to see the remnants of a homestead built in the early 1900s. Along the trail, you’ll come across the ruins of the Ewoldsen house, a barn, and several other structures. The family that lived here was considered wealthy at the time, and owned one of the first automobiles in Big Sur.

You can also observe the many wild animals that live in the area, such as deer, raccoons, and squirrels. At the end of the canyon, you can take a side trip to a waterfall, depending on the season and the water level.

The Ewoldsen Trail is a well-maintained path, with few areas of steep ascent or descent. However, it is a popular trail, so we suggest starting early in the day, especially during peak season (April through September), when the parking lot fills up quickly. We also recommend bringing plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Overall, hiking the Ewoldsen Trail is a must-do activity with your family while in Big Sur. It’s a great way to enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the area, while also learning about its rich history and spending quality time together.
