Big Timber, Montana is an iconic location known for its beautiful landscapes and bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities. One of the most popular activities for visitors to the area is fishing in the Boulder River. Here’s a brief guide to everything you need to know about fishing in the Boulder River.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that the Boulder River is a destination fishery. This means that it’s a unique and special location for fishing, and as such, it’s important to respect the rules and guidelines set forth by local organizations to preserve the river’s delicate ecosystem.

One of the most popular fish species found in the Boulder River is the trout. The river is home to a population of wild rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, making it an ideal location for anglers of all skill levels. That being said, some areas of the river are catch-and-release, so it’s important to check the regulations before you start fishing.

If you’re looking to fish in the Boulder River, you’ll need to purchase a Montana fishing license. You can purchase a license online or at a local retailer. It’s important to keep your license with you at all times while fishing, as local authorities may request it.

When it comes to equipment, fly fishing is the most popular method in the Boulder River. This is because the river has a wide range of conditions and habitat types, and fly fishing allows for precision and accuracy in casting. Because the river is a freestone stream, it’s important to bring a variety of flies with you to match the hatch.

As for when to fish in the Boulder River, the best time is typically from late May through early October. During this time, the water levels are ideal for fishing, and the weather is relatively mild. However, fishing is possible year-round, so don’t let the colder weather deter you.

Overall, fishing in the Boulder River is an incredible experience that all outdoor enthusiasts should try at least once.
