Colossal Cave Adventure

Colossal
Source: www.engadget.com

Carthage, NY may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of adventure, but it's home to a hidden treasure that will transport you to a whole new world: the Colossal Cave Adventure.

The Colossal Cave Adventure, also known as "Adventure," is a text-based computer game created in 1975 by Will Crowther and expanded upon by Don Woods. It's considered one of the very first adventure games, and its influence can be seen in countless modern games, from the popular "Zork" series to "Myst" and beyond.

The game takes place in a cave complex in Arizona, and the player's goal is to explore the cave, solve puzzles, and find treasures. The gameplay involves typing commands in plain English, such as "go west" or "take key." The game's original version included 70 rooms to explore, and later versions added even more.

So how does a game created in the 70s end up in Carthage, NY? The answer lies with a local resident named Dave Platt. Platt was an early computer enthusiast who discovered Adventure during his college years. He fell in love with the game and eventually became one of its leading experts, writing books and articles about the game and even creating his own version.

In 1981, Platt attended a conference in California and had the chance to meet Will Crowther, Adventure's original creator. The two hit it off and soon became friends. Eventually, Crowther gave Platt a copy of the game's original source code, which he had thought was lost forever.

Platt brought the source code back to Carthage and set up a computer system so that anyone could play Adventure for free. The system became incredibly popular, drawing visitors from all over. Today, the Adventure system is still up and running, and it's considered a must-visit destination for fans of the game and computer history buffs alike.

While it may not be an adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventure, the Colossal Cave Adventure offers something just as valuable: a glimpse into the early days of computer gaming and a chance to experience a classic game in its original form. So if you're ever in Carthage, NY, be sure to check it out!
