For many Chicagoans, the arrival of December means one thing: the opening of the Christkindlmarket. This festive outdoor market, located in Daley Plaza downtown, brings the spirit of Christmas alive with its unique blend of traditional German foods, music, and handmade gifts. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned Christkindlmarket enthusiast, here's everything you need to know about making the most of this beloved holiday event.

The Christkindlmarket originated in Nuremberg, Germany, and is a popular tradition in many European cities. It first came to Chicago in 1996 and has since become a beloved holiday tradition for locals and tourists alike. The market is modeled after traditional German Christmas markets, with vendors selling handmade gifts, ornaments, and other items, while food stands serve up classic German fare like bratwursts, schnitzel, and potato pancakes. The atmosphere is lively and festive, with carolers and musicians performing throughout the day.

One of the highlights of the Christkindlmarket is the selection of unique and handmade gifts available from the vendors. From ornaments and holiday decorations to jewelry and clothing, there's something for everyone on your gift list. One tip to keep in mind is to arrive early if you're looking for a specific item, as many of the more popular vendors can sell out quickly. Additionally, it's always a good idea to bring cash, as some vendors may not accept credit cards.

In addition to the shopping, one of the best parts of the Christkindlmarket is the food. Whether you're in the mood for something sweet or savory, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can't go wrong with a steaming hot serving of spätzle, or a warm pretzel straight out of the oven. And no visit to the Christkindlmarket would be complete without trying the famous Glühwein, a warm and spicy mulled wine that's sure to keep you warm on a chilly winter day.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Christkindlmarket is the storytelling. The market is named after the "Christkind," the angelic figure who is said to bring gifts to children on Christmas Eve in German-speaking countries. Throughout the day, visitors can hear stories of the Christkind and other holiday traditions from German-speaking storytellers.

Overall, the Christkindlmarket is a must-visit for anyone in Chicago during the holiday season. With its festive atmosphere, delicious food, and unique gifts, it's the perfect place to get in the holiday spirit. So bundle up, grab a warm drink, and enjoy one of the most beloved holiday traditions in the Windy City. As one visitor put it, "The Christkindlmarket is the perfect place to experience the magic of Christmas in Chicago."

It's like a winter wonderland with all the rides, ice sculptures, and holiday activities. Another great activity is visiting the Art Institute of Chicago. It's a great way to escape the cold weather and explore some amazing artwork. And of course, you can't forget about trying the famous deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati's or Giordano's. It's the perfect comfort food for a chilly day. Chicago in December has something for everyone to enjoy!

I absolutely love visiting Chicago in December! One of my favorite things to do is to go ice skating at Millennium Park. The atmosphere is just so festive with all the holiday lights and decorations. Another must-do activity is checking out the Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza. It's like stepping into a traditional German Christmas market with all the delicious food and unique gifts. And of course, no trip to Chicago in December is complete without seeing the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. The entire street is beautifully lit up with decorations and the parade is a sight to behold. Overall, December in Chicago is a magical experience that should not be missed!
