Green dyeing of the Chicago River

If you're planning to visit Chicago on St. Patrick's Day, one of the most iconic events that you won't want to miss is the dyeing of the Chicago River. This annual tradition has been held every year since 1961 and involves turning the river water bright green to celebrate the Irish holiday.

The history of the river dyeing dates back to the early 1900s when the Chicago River was still used for shipping and transportation. Due to pollution from the factories and industrial plants lining the river, its water had become more of an unsightly brown color. In 1961, a group of local plumbers with Irish heritage had the idea to use green dye as a way to visually “embrace” the Irish holiday and attract visitors to Chicago. They approached the mayor and were given permission to dye the river green every year on St. Patrick’s Day.

Today, the tradition continues with the help of the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130, who use an eco-friendly vegetable dye to carry on the tradition. The dye is poured from small motorized boats into the river by members of the union, starting at Columbus Drive and proceeding southward. The dyeing process takes about 45 minutes to an hour and results in a stunning, vibrant green color for up to five hours.

The event typically draws hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom eagerly wait for the dyeing of the river to start. Spectators can watch the process from multiple viewing sites throughout the city. One of the most popular viewing spots is the East side of Michigan Avenue Bridge, where onlookers can see the river change from a murky gray/brown color to a bright, emerald green.

While the dyeing of the Chicago River is undoubtedly the most significant St. Patrick's Day event in town, the city also offers plenty of other ways to celebrate the holiday. There are events and parades all over the city to commemorate the day, and many of the city's popular Irish pubs will have live music, traditional Irish food, and plenty of drinks to keep the festivities going.

In conclusion, the dyeing of the Chicago River is a unique and incredible experience that makes the city come alive on St. Patrick's Day. The vivid green color of the river is an iconic symbol of the holiday, and the excitement that it generates is contagious. For anyone visiting Chicago on March 17th, the dyeing of the river should be at the top of their list of things to see and do.
