The first thing that struck me was the lake's size, and there are several boat ramps spread out around the lake, making it easy to launch boats, canoes, or kayaks. We rented a pontoon boat from one of the boat rental vendors, and it was an enjoyable experience. We were able to explore the lake at our leisure and admire the surrounding scenery. If you enjoy fishing, there are several types of fish in the lake, including bass, crappie, and catfish. The lake holds several fishing tournaments each year, so check the calendar before planning your trip.

The lake has three camping areas, but we stayed at the Walnut River camping area. The sites are spacious, and the camping area is shaded, which was a welcome relief from the Kansas summer heat. There are several hiking trails around the lake that are worth exploring. The Guy Park Trail is a 4.5-mile trail that takes you around the lake and is perfect for a morning or evening walk. We enjoyed the scenery as we walked along the trail and even spotted some wildlife.

If you're looking for some adventure, the lake provides a playground area as well. The park has a unique design, and the equipment is ideal for children of all ages. The park overlooks the lake, making it a picturesque location for a picnic or a family gathering. The park's amenities include an amphitheater, barbecue grills, and picnic tables.

The best time to visit the lake is during the summer months. The lake bustles with life in the warmer months, and many events are held during this time. The annual El Dorado Lake Triathlon is held in June each year and attracts participants from all over the area. Another popular event is the Kansas BBQ Championship, which takes place in September.

In conclusion, El Dorado Lake is a perfect destination for anyone looking for an outdoor adventure. There are activities for everyone, from boating, fishing, camping, and hiking. The museum features an impressive collection of American Indian and Western art, as well as modern and contemporary works. Whether you are a casual art seeker or a serious collector, you will find something fascinating in this museum.

Located in the heart of downtown El Dorado, the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art is easy to find. The building itself is a work of art with its stunning architecture, including a grand entrance made of limestone and a large, stained glass window above the door. Once inside, you will find several galleries filled with art from well-known artists such as Edward S. Curtis, Alfred Jacob Miller, and Thomas Hart Benton.

One of the most unique things about the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art is the way the art is displayed. Instead of traditional white walls, the galleries have deep red and green walls, which provide a warm and inviting atmosphere. The lighting is also carefully designed to highlight each work of art, ensuring that you can see every detail up close.

In addition to the art itself, the museum also provides an excellent opportunity to learn about American Indian and Western history. The museum has a dedicated space for American Indian art, which showcases the rich culture and history of the indigenous people. Dr. Coutts was a prominent physician in El Dorado, and he had a passion for collecting art. He purchased his first American Indian artifact in 1904, and his collection grew from there. Eventually, Dr. Coutts decided to share his collection with the community by opening the museum in 1970.

Another fun fact about the museum is that it has a sculpture garden outside. The garden features several sculptures, including a bronze statue of a cowboy on horseback and a statue of a Native American woman. The garden is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Kansas weather while admiring some stunning art.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a unique and educational experience in El Dorado, the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art is a must-see. If you're looking for a quaint and charming experience in El Dorado, Kansas, make sure to visit the Walnut Valley Farmers Market. The market is located in the heart of downtown, a picturesque area with a historic district full of cute shops and eateries. The market takes place on Saturdays from 7:30 am to noon, from May to mid-September, so make sure to plan accordingly.

One of the best things about the Walnut Valley Farmers Market is the variety of vendors, selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. You'll find local farmers selling fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as baked goods, honey, jams, and jellies. There are also vendors selling handmade soaps, candles, and other home goods. It's an excellent opportunity to support local businesses and get a taste of what Kansas has to offer.

One of the vendors that caught my eye was a woman selling beautiful bouquets of flowers. She was so friendly and knowledgeable, telling me about the different types of flowers and how to care for them. I ended up buying a stunning arrangement for my Airbnb, which brightened up the whole room. Another vendor that stood out was a man selling delicious smoked meats, including brisket and ribs. He even offered samples, and I couldn't resist buying some to take back to my family's barbecue later that day.

There's also a strong community atmosphere at the Walnut Valley Farmers Market. People come from all over the area to catch up with friends and neighbors, and it's a great place to meet new people. I loved seeing families with young children picking out produce together, and older couples out for a leisurely Saturday morning stroll. It's truly a place for everyone, and it's easy to see why it's such a beloved fixture in El Dorado.

Before you go, make sure to bring cash, as not all vendors accept credit or debit cards. I'd also recommend bringing a tote bag to carry all of your purchases, as well as a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated in the heat. It can get pretty crowded, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do some weaving in and out of people. Oh, and don't leave without trying one of the homemade cinnamon rolls – they're incredible!

Overall, the Walnut Valley Farmers Market is a must-visit if you find yourself in El Dorado on a Saturday morning. It's a delightful experience that's perfect for solo travelers, families, and groups of friends. As someone who loves supporting local businesses and trying new things, I can't recommend it enough. Whether you're in the mood for fresh produce, handmade crafts, or just a friendly community vibe, you'll find it all here.

Upon arriving at Circle Cinema, I was struck by its charming façade, complete with a marquee announcing the films of the week. Stepping inside, I was transported back in time by the décor and architecture of the space. The theatre originally seated 900 patrons, but has since been scaled back to a more intimate size of 200 seats. However, the original ornate plasterwork on the ceiling and walls has been preserved and restored, creating an ambiance that is both classic and elegant.

I was pleased to find that the theatre still operates as a traditional movie house, showing a variety of films from blockbuster hits to art-house productions. But Circle Cinema is more than just a place to watch movies – it’s also a cultural hub for the community. The theatre hosts events such as live music performances, trivia nights, and classic film screenings. In fact, each year Circle Cinema hosts a film festival called the Tallgrass Film Festival, which showcases independent films from around the world.

One of the highlights of my visit to Circle Cinema was the friendly and knowledgeable staff. They were eager to chat about the history of the theatre and answer any questions I had. In fact, they even offered to give me a tour of the projection room, which was a real treat. It was fascinating to see the old-school projection equipment and learn about their process for selecting and screening films.

For anyone visiting El Dorado, a trip to Circle Cinema is a must-do. Not only is it a unique piece of local history, but it’s also a great way to spend an evening catching a film. If you do decide to visit, here are a few tips to make the most of your experience:

  • Check out the calendar of events before you go. While the theatre primarily shows movies, there are often other special events happening as well.
  • Arrive early. With only 200 seats, Circle Cinema can fill up quickly. If you want to ensure a good seat, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime.
  • Indulge in some classic movie theatre snacks. The concession stand at Circle Cinema serves up a variety of tasty treats, including popcorn, candy, and soda.
  • Don’t be afraid to chat with the staff! They’re friendly and passionate about what they do, and they have a wealth of knowledge about the theatre and its history.

In the words of the theatre’s owner, “It’s not just a movie theatre, it’s an experience.” I couldn’t agree more – Circle Cinema is a true treasure, both for the community of El Dorado and for anyone who appreciates the magic of the movies.
