One of the most fascinating aspects of this lake is its vibrant pink color, captivating visitors from all around the world. However, Lake Hillier is not just visually stunning; it is also home to a unique ecosystem and wildlife that make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

The pink hue of Lake Hillier is caused by the presence of a microorganism known as Dunaliella salina. This microorganism is a type of algae that thrives in the highly saline environment of the lake. The combination of the salt content and the presence of a pink pigment within the algae creates the distinctive pink color that Lake Hillier is famous for.

Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot various species, including pelicans, black swans, and seagulls, among others.

The lake is also home to some unique marine life. Its saline conditions make it an ideal habitat for certain species of bacteria that are tolerant of extreme environments. These bacteria, in turn, support a food chain that includes small organisms like zooplankton and invertebrates. These small organisms attract larger creatures such as fish, which, in turn, attract predators like seals and sharks.

If you are lucky, you may even spot a rare marsupial called the quokka on the shores of Lake Hillier. These cute and friendly creatures are native to Western Australia and are known for their friendly nature and adorable appearance. However, it is important to remember that they are wild animals and should be observed from a distance to ensure their safety and your own.
