Go clamming

Go
Source: Gearhart by the Sea

Oregon is famous for its beautiful beaches and rich marine life. One of the most popular activities on the coast is clamming, and the small town of Gearhart has become a prime destination for those looking to hunt for shellfish.

Clamming season in Gearhart runs from October to May, with the peak months being November through January. During this time, the razor clam is the primary target species, and they can be found in abundance along the sandy coastline.

To get started with clamming in Gearhart, you will need a few essential items. A clamming license is required for anyone over the age of 14 and can be purchased online or at various locations in town. You will also need a shovel, a bucket or net, and waterproof boots or waders.

Once you have all of your gear, the best way to get started is by checking the tide charts. Razor clams are most easily found during low tide, so plan your trip accordingly. With your gear in hand, head out to the beach and start looking for small holes or "show" clams. These indicate the location of larger razor clams that are buried beneath the sand.

When you find a show clam, use your shovel to dig carefully around it, being sure to keep an eye on the waterline so that you don't get trapped by the incoming tide. Once you have found a clam, gently remove it from the sand and place it in your bucket or net. Remember to fill in any holes you make with sand to protect the ecosystem and keep the beach beautiful for future visitors.

After a successful clamming trip, take your catch back to your home or hotel and clean them carefully. Razor clams are delicious when steamed, fried, or baked, and many local restaurants offer them on their menus.

In Gearhart, you can find several shops that sell clamming gear and offer advice and tips for those new to the sport. You can even take a guided tour with a local expert who will help you find the best clamming spots and teach you how to clean and prepare your catch.

In conclusion, if you love seafood and enjoy spending time on the beach, clamming in Gearhart is an activity you won't want to miss. With the right equipment and a little practice, you could end up with a delicious dinner and memories that will last a lifetime.
