Go fishing at Bald Eagle Lake

Go
Source: YouTube

If you're looking for a fun outdoor activity in Hugo, MN, there's nothing quite like fishing at Bald Eagle Lake. This beautiful spot offers plenty of opportunities to catch a variety of fish species, including walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Here's what you need to know if you're planning a fishing trip to Bald Eagle Lake.

Getting There

Located just a short drive from the heart of Hugo, Bald Eagle Lake is easily accessible by car. The lake is situated in the northeast corner of the city, and you can reach it by taking County Road 14 (Main Street) east until you reach Lake Avenue, then turning left and continuing north. There are several parking lots and boat launches around the lake, so finding a place to park shouldn't be a problem.

Fishing Regulations

Like many bodies of water in Minnesota, Bald Eagle Lake has specific fishing regulations designed to protect its fish populations and ensure sustainable fishing practices. For example, the lake has a catch-and-release policy for all large and medium-sized bass (i.e. those over 14 inches in length) between May 15 and June 15. Additionally, you can only keep two walleye per day, and they must be at least 15 inches long. Make sure to review the most up-to-date fishing regulations before you head out to the lake.

Equipment and Bait

To increase your chances of catching fish on Bald Eagle Lake, you'll need the right equipment and bait. A medium-action spinning rod is a good choice for most types of fishing, and you'll want to use monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing line that's between 6 and 10 pounds test strength. As for bait, live minnows and nightcrawlers are popular choices for walleye and bass, while artificial lures like jigs and crankbaits can also be effective.

The Best Fishing Spots

So where should you go to find the best fishing spots on Bald Eagle Lake? Many anglers suggest trying your luck at one of the lake's six large underwater humps, which are known to attract bass and walleye. The two larger bays on the southeast and southwest corners of the lake can also be good spots to find northern pike and muskie. Another option is to use a fish finder or sonar device to search for schools of fish in deeper waters.

Whether you're an experienced angler or a novice looking to try out fishing for the first time, Bald Eagle Lake in Hugo, MN has plenty to offer. With a little bit of preparation and some patience, you just might walk away with a great catch that you can bring home and prepare for dinner.
