Located in the heart of the Bay of Islands, Kerikeri is a town steeped in heritage and culture. One of the most fascinating attractions in Kerikeri is the historic Stone Store and Kemp House, two of the oldest buildings in New Zealand.

The Stone Store was built in 1832, and it still stands tall and proud today, a testimony to the early pioneers who founded this country. Constructed using locally sourced volcanic rock, the Stone Store was originally used as a trading post by the Church Missionary Society. It was a vital hub of commerce in the early years of Kerikeri's settlement, catering to the needs of Maori and European traders alike. Next to the Stone Store is Kemp House, which was built in 1821 by the Reverend John Gare Butler. It is the oldest building in New Zealand still standing on its original foundations. The house was later purchased by James Kemp, a former naval officer, in 1832. Kemp was a trader who conducted business in the Stone Store, and he used Kemp House as his family home. It has since been restored and opened to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into what life was like for early settlers in New Zealand.

Wandering through the Stone Store and Kemp House is like stepping back in time. The buildings are full of artifacts and memorabilia from the early days of Kerikeri, and the displays are informative and engaging. Visitors can learn about the history of Maori-European relations in the region, the early years of Christian missions in New Zealand, and the challenges faced by the settlers in their efforts to carve out a new life in a land that was very different from their homelands.

In addition to exploring the Stone Store and Kemp House, visitors can enjoy the beautiful gardens surrounding the buildings. The gardens are designed to be in keeping with the historic nature of the site, and they offer a peaceful and tranquil haven for visitors to enjoy.

Whether you are a history buff or simply looking for a unique experience, a visit to Kerikeri's Stone Store and Kemp House is a must-do. I visited Kerikeri last summer and fell in love with the place. One of my favorite things to do there was exploring the Kerikeri River Track. The peaceful walk along the river is so calming and the surrounding nature is just breathtaking. I also highly recommend visiting the Makana Chocolate Factory. Their handmade chocolates are absolutely delicious and it's a great place to pick up some souvenirs. If you're a fan of nature, a trip to the Puketi Forest is a must. The ancient kauri trees are awe-inspiring and it's a great opportunity to learn about the local flora and fauna. Kerikeri is definitely worth a visit!

Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I'm so glad you had such a great experience in Kerikeri. The Stone Store and Kemp House are definitely top attractions and provide such a fascinating glimpse into New Zealand's history. The Rainbow Falls Walkway sounds absolutely breathtaking, and I will definitely have to visit next time I'm in the area. And who can resist some wine tasting? It's always a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Kerikeri seems like a true hidden gem!
