Lockport, IL is home to one of the coolest attractions in the area - the Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride. This unique experience takes visitors into the depths of the earth, exploring the mysterious caves that run beneath the city.

The Lockport Cave was formed millions of years ago by the waters of the Illinois River. Over time, erosion caused the river to change course, leaving behind a system of limestone caves that were perfect for exploration. The first documented exploration of the cave took place in 1883, and since then, visitors have been intrigued by this underground wonderland.

Today, the Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride offers a guided tour that takes visitors through the cave system on a boat ride. The boat ride itself is a unique experience - visitors climb aboard a flat-bottomed boat that glides silently through the water, propelled by the guide. The water in the caves is crystal clear, and visitors can see all the way to the bottom of the riverbed.

During the tour, visitors will learn about the history of the cave system and the important role it played in the development of the city of Lockport. The caves were used for a variety of purposes over the years, including as a hiding place for fugitives during the Civil War and as a storage area for beer during Prohibition.

There are several highlights of the tour, including a stop at the "Upside-Down Room." This room is named for the way the stalactites and stalagmites seem to be growing in opposite directions, creating a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors will also pass through the "Grand Rotunda," which is the largest room in the cave system and features towering limestone walls and a breathtaking waterfall.

Visitors should come prepared for their tour - the cave system can be damp and chilly, so wearing layers and comfortable shoes is a must. It's also a good idea to bring a camera to capture the stunning beauty of the caves, and to take advantage of the many photo opportunities along the way.

The Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride is a one-of-a-kind experience that shouldn't be missed. Whether you're a history buff, an adventure seeker, or just looking for something different to do with your family, this tour offers something for everyone. So book your tickets today and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the heart of the earth.
