Spot whales from the Makena Beach

Spot
Source: The Hawaii Vacation Guide

Makena Beach is a popular tourist destination in Hawaii that offers a magnificent view of the ocean. One of the best experiences that visitors can have while at Makena Beach is whale watching. The months between November and April are the best times for this activity as this is the whale migration period.

Whale watching can be done from the shore, but to get the best view, one can opt for a boat tour. There are several companies that offer whale watching tours in the area. These tours provide visitors with a front-row seat to the spectacular sight of humpback whales breaching and showing off their acrobatic skills.

However, if you prefer to watch the whales from the shore, Makena Beach has several vantage points where you can spot these magnificent creatures. From the beach, visitors can see frequent sightings of humpback whales in the shallow waters close to the shore. Look for the spout of water that they exhale while coming up to the surface. You may also notice a dark area under the water, which is the humpback whale's body.

Makena Beach offers a perfect view of the whales' natural behaviors such as breaching, tail slapping, and spy hopping. Breaching is when a whale jumps out of the water, lifting its head, and then falling back in with a huge splash. Tail slapping is when a whale slaps its huge tail on the water. Spy hopping is when a whale rises partially out of the water and looks around.

When watching the whales from the shore, make sure to keep a safe distance from them. Getting too close could scare or disturb the whales, which can pose a danger to both the visitors and the whales. Maintain at least 100 yards distance from the whales while in the water and 1,000 feet while on a vessel to avoid getting fined by the authorities.

Visiting Makena Beach to spot whales is an excellent activity for all ages. It is an opportunity to witness the majesty of nature and marvel at the beauty of these incredible marine animals. Don't forget to bring binoculars or a camera to capture the breathtaking moment of whale sightings at Makena Beach.
