This stunning mansion and its breathtaking 1,500-acre estate have been a popular tourist destination for decades, and for good reason – the beautifully preserved architecture, lavish interiors, and fascinating history make it a true gem of the Midwest.

Built in the early 1920s by Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband, Alfred Wilson, Meadow Brook Hall was intended to be a symbol of their success and wealth. With their vast inheritances, the Wilsons set out to create a home that would be their legacy, showcasing their love for art, design, and music.

Among the most striking features of Meadow Brook Hall are the dozens of murals that adorn many of the walls and ceilings. Titled "The American Story," these incredible artworks were painted by the celebrated artist Ezra Winter, depicting scenes from American history from the earliest Native American civilizations to the end of World War I.

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of Meadow Brook Hall is its connection to music. Matilda Dodge Wilson was an accomplished musician, and she used the mansion as a showcase for her love of art and culture. The Wilsons often hosted concerts, recitals, and other performances in the ballroom, and they even had their own custom-designed pipe organ installed in the mansion's music room.

Today, Meadow Brook Hall is a beloved landmark in Oakland County, offering visitors a glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of the wealthy elite during the early 20th century. The estate is open for tours year-round, and visitors can explore the stunning interiors, grounds, and gardens, as well as learn more about its fascinating history and the people who lived there.

One of the unique features of The Palace was its design. The arena was built in a circular shape, with a domed roof that rose 85 feet above the playing surface. The seating bowl was divided into tiers, with a capacity of 22,076 for basketball games and up to 23,000 for concerts. The Palace was also known for its luxury amenities, including 180 luxury suites and six private clubs, which catered to high-end clientele.

Some of the most memorable moments in sports and entertainment history took place at The Palace. In 1990, the arena hosted the NBA All-Star Game, with Magic Johnson taking home MVP honors. The Pistons won three NBA championships while playing at The Palace, in 1989, 1990, and 2004. The arena also hosted memorable concerts by some of the biggest names in music, including Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, and the Rolling Stones.

Despite its success, The Palace faced challenges in its later years. The Pistons' move to Little Caesars Arena marked the end of an era for The Palace, leaving the arena without a primary tenant. In 2016, it was announced that The Palace would be closing its doors for good, with a final concert by Bob Seger serving as the last event held at the arena on September 23, 2017.

Today, while The Palace may no longer be in operation, its impact on Oakland County and the surrounding area is still felt. Its legacy is a testament to the power of sports and entertainment to bring people together and create lasting memories.
