Source: graveyardoftheatlantic.com

When you're vacationing in the Outer Banks, a rainy day might seem like a disappointment. However, there are plenty of indoor attractions to explore and things to do even when it's drizzly or overcast outside. One great option is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras.

The museum is dedicated to the maritime history of the Outer Banks, particularly the treacherous waters that have caused countless shipwrecks over the centuries. The focus is on the period from the early European explorers to the present day, with exhibits showcasing everything from the first attempts at colonization to the modern-day Coast Guard.

Some of the museum's most interesting artifacts include shipwreck items, such as shiny cannons and anchors that were recovered from the sea floor. There are also detailed models of historic vessels, such as the USS Monitor, a Civil War ironclad that sank off the coast of Cape Hatteras.

One of the most exciting parts of the museum is the interactive exhibits. Visitors can step inside a replica of a World War II-era submarine periscope and get a view of the coast as if they were a submariner. There's also a hands-on lab where children (and adults!) can learn about buoyancy, propulsion, and other scientific concepts related to ships and the ocean.

Several large galleries display historic photos and artifacts, and there's even a theatre that shows documentaries about the maritime history of the Outer Banks. Additionally, the museum offers guided tours and educational programs for school groups and other organizations.

Overall, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is an excellent way to learn about the rich history of the Outer Banks even when it's raining outside. It's educational, fun, and sure to inspire a fascination with the stories of the sea that have shaped this unique part of the world. So if you find yourself with a free day on a rainy OBX vacation, be sure to add the museum to your itinerary!
