Source: VinWonders

Phu Quoc is a beautiful island located off the southern coast of Vietnam. The island is known for its stunning beaches, clear blue waters, and lush tropical forests. One of the most unique attractions on the island is the infamous Coconut Prison.

The Coconut Prison, also known as Phu Quoc Prison, was originally built by the French during colonial rule. The prison was used to imprison Vietnamese people who were fighting for their independence from the French. After the French left Vietnam and the country was divided, the prison was then used by the South Vietnamese government to imprison those who were fighting against their policies.

The prison is located in An Thoi town, in the southern part of Phu Quoc. The prison was built on a hill overlooking the ocean and was designed to hold 40 prisoners at any one time. However, at its peak, the prison held more than 40,000 prisoners.

Visiting the prison is a somber experience. The cells that the prisoners were kept in are small, dark, and cramped. There are signs throughout the prison that explain the history and the atrocities that occurred there. Visitors can see the torture cells, where prisoners were beaten and tortured for information. There is also a room with pictures of former prisoners and stories about their experiences.

Despite the grim history of the Coconut Prison, it is an important reminder of the struggle for independence that took place in Vietnam. The prison provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the country's history and the sacrifices that were made by those who fought against oppression.

If you are visiting Phu Quoc, a visit to the Coconut Prison is a must. The prison serves as a powerful reminder of the history of the island and the struggles that were faced by those who fought for independence. The experience may be somber, but it is an important and worthwhile one.
