Bird watching at Bird's Nest Sanctuary

Bird
Source: Malampaya Ecotours

As the gateway to the world-renowned underground river, Puerto Princesa is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike. But apart from its underground river, Puerto Princesa is also home to a thriving ecosystem of rare and unique bird species. One of the best places to spot these feathered friends is at the Birds Nest Sanctuary, located in Barangay Irawan, about 20 kilometers from the city proper.

The Birds Nest Sanctuary is a protected area that covers around 100 hectares of lowland forest. It is home to various bird species that are endemic to the Philippines, such as the Palawan hornbill, the blue-headed racquet-tail, the Palawan peacock-pheasant, and the green imperial pigeon. What makes this sanctuary unique is that it is also a breeding ground for the swiftlet bird, which produces the famous edible bird's nest or "balinsasayaw" in Filipino.

Most guests of the Birds Nest Sanctuary come to witness the swiftlets in action. These small gray birds fly in and out of the sanctuary's artificial nesting structures, where they create and collect the strands of their saliva that eventually harden into the prized nests. During the breeding season, which usually occurs from November to February, the males perform acrobatic courtship displays to attract the females. Visitors can marvel at the birds' aerial ballet and listen to their cacophony of chirps and calls.

But aside from the swiftlets, there are plenty of other birds to see at the Birds Nest Sanctuary. The sanctuary's trained guides are knowledgeable about the various species that inhabit the area. They use their keen ears and eyes to point out the birds' calls, behaviors, and nesting sites. Some of the birds are easier to spot than others, but with patience and luck, visitors can tick off some rare species from their birding list.

To fully appreciate and respect the Birds Nest Sanctuary, visitors must follow some guidelines. The sanctuary only accommodates a limited number of guests per day, and tourists must book their visit in advance through the City Tourism Office or the Provincial Tourism Office. They should also wear appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellent, as well as avoid making loud noises, touching or disturbing the birds and their nests, and littering.

Bird watching at the Birds Nest Sanctuary is not just a leisurely activity; it is an opportunity to witness the wonders of nature and to contribute to conservation efforts. By supporting eco-tourism sites like this, we can help preserve the beauty and biodiversity of Puerto Princesa and its creatures, feathered or not.
