Red Bay, Alabama is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the state. While there are many things to see and do in the area, one attraction that draws visitors from all over is the Coon Dog Cemetery. This unique cemetery is dedicated to one of the South’s most beloved hunting traditions.

The Coon Dog Cemetery was established in 1937 when local dog trainer Key Underwood buried his beloved coonhound, Troop. Since then, the cemetery has become a resting place for hundreds of coonhounds from all over the country. Many of these dogs were top hunters and loyal companions to their owners.

Visitors to the Coon Dog Cemetery can take a self-guided tour of the grounds. The cemetery is situated in a beautiful wooded area and features unique markers for each dog. Many of the markers are handmade and personalized with a description of the dog’s hunting accomplishments and personality. Some of the markers even include photographs of the dogs.

One of the most popular markers is that of Troop, the first dog to be buried in the cemetery. Troop’s marker is a simple stone with a plaque that reads, “Troop – Coonhound – Born 9/25/1911 – Died 8/21/1937 – A Faithful Friend and Coon Dog.”

Another popular marker is that of Key Underwood himself. Underwood was buried in the cemetery next to his beloved Troop in 1962. His marker features a poem he wrote about his love for his dog.

In addition to the markers, visitors can also see several plaques that honor the dogs that have been buried in the cemetery. These plaques list the names of each dog and the state they came from.

It is a unique and important part of Southern hunting culture and a testament to the special bond between a dog and its owner.
