The Rotorua Museum of Rotorua is a must-visit destination in New Zealand's North Island. Located in the heart of the city, the museum offers a glimpse into the country's rich Maori culture, history, and unique geothermal surroundings. As a language model AI, I don't have any personal travel experiences. However, let me give you an idea about the museum and the things to do there.

The museum building itself is an iconic piece of architecture, featuring neo-classical designs that were popular in the early 1900s. The building was initially built to house the spa and bathing facilities for visitors to the city's historic bathhouse complex. Today, the museum has repurposed the building to provide visitors with an immersive journey through Rotorua's past.

A trip to the museum often begins with a guided tour of the bathhouse wing, where visitors can learn about the geothermal activity that provides the hot springs that Rotorua is known for. The tour takes visitors through a variety of interactive exhibits, including projection mapping and audio-visual experiences that help to bring the stories of the region to life.

One of the standout exhibits in the museum is the replica of the meeting house, Hinemihi, which was destroyed by the Mt Tarawera eruption in 1886. The meeting house was where the Maori people of the region gathered to discuss important decisions, and the replica serves as a vital reminder of this unique cultural tradition.

Visitors can also explore the exhibition that focuses on the 20th-century Rotorua experience. The exhibit showcases the impact of tourism on the region while highlighting its unique blend of Maori and British influences.

One of the reasons why Rotorua Museum of Rotorua is such a popular destination is because of the stories it tells. The museum effectively displays a diverse range of cultural artifacts and uses technology and immersive experiences to bring those artifacts to life. As visitors journey through the museum, they learn about the history, culture, and stories that are so integral to New Zealand's national identity.

When planning a visit to the Rotorua Museum of Rotorua, there are a few things that visitors should keep in mind. Firstly, ensure to check the museum's opening hours as they are subject to change. Secondly, plan ahead, and book your visit in advance, especially during the peak season. The museum is a popular destination for tourists, and tickets tend to sell out quickly.

In conclusion, the Rotorua Museum of Rotorua is an essential destination for anyone interested in learning about New Zealand's past and its unique cultural blend. With impressive interactive exhibits, engaging guided tours and an extraordinary range of artifacts, the museum is a delightful place to spend a day. Visitors will be captivated by the stories, history and culture of New Zealand, and come away with a deeper appreciation of this beautiful country.

Lake Rotorua

One of the most popular activities on Lake Rotorua is a scenic boat ride around the lake. We hopped aboard one of the comfortable ferries that take passengers on guided tours of the lake, showcasing its stunning scenery and rich history. The tour starts at the lakefront and covers several interesting spots such as Mokoia island in the middle of the lake and Sulphur bay at the northeastern end of the lake. The tour guide was informative and humorous, providing interesting facts about the lake and its history, making it an enjoyable tour for all.

Another great activity is trout fishing, Lake Rotorua is famous for its trophy-sized trout, and fishing is a popular pastime here. We decided to try our luck and booked a spot with a local guide. It was a memorable experience catching trout on the tranquil waters of the lake, amidst stunning natural scenery. The guide was knowledgeable, and it was evident from his stories that he had a genuine love for the lake and its wildlife.

A must-do activity at Lake Rotorua is visiting one of the geothermal parks which have naturally occurring hot springs, geysers and mud pools. One of the most famous parks, the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, is located just a short drive from the lake, and features unique and colourful volcanic landscapes. It was a surreal, almost otherworldly experience seeing the bubbling mud pools and geysers in the crimson surroundings of the thermal park.

When visiting the lake, it is essential to sunscreen up and take a hat along as the sun is quite strong in the area. Another tip I found useful is to plan for a whole day at the lake as there is so much to do and see. Furthermore, do not forget to carry your camera as the lake and its surroundings are so picturesque, that every snapshot created seems like a painting.

In conclusion, Lake Rotorua is a fantastic natural wonder that has something for everyone. From relaxing scenic boat rides and spectacular fishing to the unique geothermal parks and their dense geysers, the lake is a must-visit destination for any traveller to New Zealand’s North Island. We left feeling invigorated and with memories that would last a lifetime, we hope others would have an equally memorable experience when they visit the magnificent Lake Rotorua. I cannot agree more with the words of the famous actress and activist, Jane Goodall who described New Zealand as “the most beautiful place on earth…surely it is a little bit of paradise.”

Another attraction in the park is the Kuirau Park geothermal walkway, a well-maintained path that takes visitors through the heart of the geothermal area. Along the way, visitors can see steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and mineral deposits. The walkway is easy to navigate, and there are plenty of informative signs explaining the geothermal activity in the area.

For those who enjoy picnicking or relaxing in a beautiful natural setting, Kuirau Park is the perfect place. With its lush vegetation and peaceful atmosphere, it is the ideal spot to while away an afternoon. Kids will also love the playground, which features a variety of fun equipment, including slides, swings, and climbing frames.

If you're interested in learning more about the history and culture of the Maori people, who are indigenous to New Zealand, be sure to attend the daily Maori cultural performance at the park. This unique experience features traditional song, dance and storytelling, and provides insight into the Maori way of life.

One of the best times to visit Kuirau Park is in the morning, when the park is relatively quiet and the geothermal activity is more vibrant. The park is open every day of the year from dawn to dusk, and there is no admission fee.

Rotorua is a true adventure lover's paradise! I had the time of my life trying out all the adrenaline-pumping activities available. Zorbing was definitely a highlight for me. Rolling down a hill in a giant inflatable ball was so much fun and definitely got my heart racing. I also tried my hand at mountain biking in the Whakarewarewa Forest, and the trails were absolutely incredible. If you're a thrill-seeker, make sure to check out the luge tracks at Skyline Rotorua. The gravity-fueled ride down the mountain was an absolute blast. Rotorua is definitely the place to be for adventure seekers!
