Located on the University of Utah campus, the museum is housed in historic buildings that once served as an army post. Built in the late 1800s, Fort Douglas was one of several forts established in the western United States during the Indian Wars. It later became an important military training center during World War II, and then served as an Army Reserve Center before being decommissioned in 1991.

Today, the museum tells the story of Utah's military history from the pioneer era to the present day. Among its exhibits are displays on the Indian Wars, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Gulf War. Visitors can see artifacts such as weapons, uniforms, and equipment, and learn about the contributions of Utahns who served in the military.

One of the highlights of the museum is the exhibit on the 10th Mountain Division, a specialized unit of soldiers trained in skiing and mountain climbing during World War II. Many of these soldiers were from Utah, and they played a key role in the war effort in Italy's mountainous terrain. The exhibit includes a replica of a 10th Mountain Division hut, as well as a ski slope with equipment used by the soldiers.

In addition to its exhibits, the museum offers educational programs and events throughout the year. These include lectures, tours, and special exhibits, as well as programs for school groups and scouts. The museum also hosts an annual Veterans Day ceremony and other events to honor veterans and active duty military personnel.

While there are undoubtedly many fun activities to participate in over the three-day weekend, it is important to remember the significance of Memorial Day and to take time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. One way to do this is by attending the Memorial Day service at the historic Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Located in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Mt. Olivet Cemetery is the final resting place for many veterans of various wars, dating back to the Civil War. The cemetery is the largest in the city, spanning 140 acres and offering scenic views of the valley and the mountains beyond.

Each year, on Memorial Day, the cemetery hosts a service to honor those buried there who served in the armed forces. The solemn event begins at 10:00 am and typically lasts around one hour. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot, and to dress appropriately for the weather.

The service is organized by the Utah State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, with assistance from the Utah National Guard and other civic organizations.
