Visit Gilgal Sculpture Garden

Visit
Source: Wikipedia

Salt Lake City, Utah, is a hub of activity for locals and visitors alike. With so many options for things to do, it can be easy to overlook some of the city’s lesser-known gems. One such gem is the Gilgal Sculpture Garden, a unique outdoor art exhibit that’s worth a visit.

Located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, the Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a serene park filled with unusual sculptures and hidden treasures. But what makes this garden so interesting is its history. The sculptures were created by Thomas Battersby Child Jr., a local LDS church bishop and eccentric artist. He began creating these sculptures in his backyard during the 1940s and continued to add to them until his death in 1963.

The sculptures themselves are a mix of artistic styles and religious imagery, with many of them depicting biblical scenes or other religious symbols. But there are also some unexpected pieces, like a sphinx with the face of Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS church, and a statue of a woman peering into a crystal ball.

As visitors explore the garden, they’ll notice a number of oddities that set it apart from other parks. There are footprints engraved in the concrete walkways, for example, and an odd stone structure that looks like a giant beehive. The most prominent feature, however, is a large monument of a man’s head with a fish emerging from his mouth. This sculpture has become the park’s unofficial mascot and is a popular spot for photos.

One of the best things about the Gilgal Sculpture Garden is that it’s completely free to visit. It’s also a nice break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Salt Lake City and is a great spot to relax and enjoy the outdoors. If you’re looking for a unique and quirky attraction to add to your Salt Lake City itinerary, the Gilgal Sculpture Garden is definitely worth a visit.
