Stilt Fishing: Witness the traditional stilt fishing technique unique to Weligama

Weligama, a small coastal town in Sri Lanka, is famous for many things – its beautiful beaches, vibrant surf culture, and delicious seafood. However, one of the most fascinating aspects of this town is its traditional stilt fishing technique. For centuries, local fishermen have been using this unique method to catch fish and provide for their families.

Stilt fishing in Weligama involves perching on a thin wooden pole rooted in the shallow waters of the ocean. Fishermen climb onto the sturdy poles, often measuring around 2 meters in height, and balance themselves as they cast their fishing lines into the water below. It requires tremendous skill, agility, and concentration to maintain their balance on these poles.

The stilt fishing technique is not only visually captivating, but it also provides an efficient way to catch fish in areas where the water is not deep enough for traditional fishing practices. The fishermen position themselves during the calm hours of dawn and dusk, as these are the times when fish are most active near the shore.

The technique itself is believed to have started during World War II when there was a shortage of fishing equipment. As the story goes, enterprising fishermen improvised by using the wooden poles that were used to construct stilts for cleaning fishing nets. Over time, the method became a traditional technique that was passed down through generations.

The stilt fishing tradition in Weligama faced a decline in recent decades due to the advent of modern fishing practices and the declining fish population. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in this unique fishing method, primarily driven by the growing tourism industry in Sri Lanka.

Today, visitors to Weligama have the opportunity to witness stilt fishing in action. It has become a popular tourist attraction, and many local fishermen have opened up their spots to demonstrate the technique for interested visitors. Travelers can witness the artistry and skill of these fishermen, while also learning about the history and significance of this ancient fishing method.

However, it is essential to approach stilt fishing responsibly and respectfully. The practice has become somewhat commercialized, with some fishermen demanding fees for photographs or engaging in exploitative practices. It is best to find a reputable guide or tour operator who can connect you with local fishermen who genuinely share their passion for this age-old tradition.

Stilt fishing in Weligama is not only a unique cultural experience but also an opportunity to support local communities and preserve a centuries-old fishing tradition. As you witness the fishermen perched on their stilts, casting their lines into the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, you will not only marvel at their skill but also gain a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Weligama.
