Ice fishing at Pearrygin Lake State Park

Ice
Source: Washington Trails Association

Winter in Wenatchee is a time of both enchantment and opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts. One of the most popular winter activities in the area is ice fishing at Pearrygin Lake State Park. The park is located in Okanogan County, Washington, and it offers plenty of space for anglers to set up their gear and settle in for a day on the ice.

Pearrygin Lake is a natural lake with crystal-clear water and a wide variety of fish species. Rainbow and cutthroat trout are the most common catch, but anglers may also reel in kokanee, perch, and bass. The lake is stocked regularly with trout, so the chances of catching a lively fish are high.

To start your ice fishing adventure, you'll need to bundle up in warm clothing and bring plenty of supplies. Thick socks, boots, gloves, and a warm hat are essential, as temperatures can drop below freezing. You'll also need an ice-fishing rod, tackle, bait, a bucket to sit on, and an ice auger to make a hole in the ice.

Once you have your gear in hand, it's time to hit the ice. You'll want to look for a spot where the ice is at least four inches deep, and preferably six inches or more. Pay attention to any warning signs about thin ice, and avoid areas where the ice appears to be discolored or cracked.

When you've found a suitable spot, use your ice auger to drill a hole in the ice. The hole should be large enough to fit your fishing rod and allow you to jig your bait up and down. Then, drop your line in the water and wait for a bite!

Fishing in winter can be a peaceful and serene experience, with fewer crowds and a unique sense of tranquility. The natural beauty of Pearrygin Lake State Park adds to the charm of this activity, with snow-capped mountains in the distance and frozen trees along the shoreline.
