The World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan is a commercial hub and tourist destination for millions of people from around the world. While there are plenty of things to do near the World Trade Center, one of the most important sites in the area is the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Located at the exact site of the former World Trade Center complex, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum is a somber tribute to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The Memorial features two enormous reflecting pools, each one shaped like the footprint of one of the twin towers. Water cascades down the walls of each pool into a central void, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere.

The names of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks are etched in bronze around the edges of the pools, arranged in such a way that family members and loved ones can find specific names and pay their respects. The Memorial is entirely free to visit, and provides a powerful and emotional experience that is not to be missed.

The 9/11 Museum, which adjoins the Memorial Plaza, is a comprehensive and deeply moving collection of exhibits that tell the story of the attacks, the days that followed, and the ongoing recovery and rebuilding effort in Lower Manhattan. Exhibits include artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center site, such as twisted steel beams, crushed fire trucks, and personal mementos donated by survivors and family members.

Visitors can also watch video footage of the events of September 11, listen to audio recordings of emergency responders and survivors, and read personal accounts of those who experienced the tragedy firsthand. The Museum is a solemn and respectful space, designed to offer visitors a chance to reflect on the past and consider the future.

In addition to the Memorial and Museum, there are other ways to experience the legacy of 9/11 near the World Trade Center. The Survivor Tree, a Callery pear tree that was pulled from the rubble and nursed back to health, stands on the plaza and is a symbol of hope and resilience for New Yorkers and visitors alike.

The Oculus, a stunning steel and glass transportation hub designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, is located adjacent to the Memorial site and offers a range of shopping and dining options. And the nearby Battery Park City neighborhood is home to some of the city's best parks and playgrounds, including the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse and Rockefeller Park.

There are plenty of things to do near the World Trade Center, but for anyone looking to pay their respects to the fallen and experience a powerful and emotional reflection on the events of 9/11, the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum is an unmissable destination.
