Orlando may be known for its amusement parks and attractions, but there’s another side to this city that might surprise you: its abundance of natural waterways. One such waterway that’s gaining popularity for outdoor enthusiasts is Shingle Creek, located just a short drive from downtown Orlando.

This narrow, winding creek flows for about 23 miles from its source in Lake Tohopekaliga, eventually emptying into the Kissimmee River. Along the way, it passes through several conservation areas and parks, providing a scenic and peaceful escape from the bustle of the city.

One of the best ways to experience Shingle Creek is by kayaking. There are several outfitters in the area that rent kayaks and offer guided tours, or you can bring your own equipment if you prefer. The creek is generally calm and slow-moving, making it accessible even for beginners.

As you paddle along, keep your eyes peeled for the abundant wildlife that calls Shingle Creek home. You might spot otters, turtles, wading birds, and even alligators (though they’re usually more afraid of you than you are of them!).

One of the most popular sections of Shingle Creek for kayaking is the stretch that passes through the Shingle Creek Regional Park. This 456-acre park boasts several hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a fishing dock, in addition to its stunning waterway. You could easily spend an entire day here, exploring both on and off the water.

Another great option for kayaking on Shingle Creek is the historic Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek. This living history museum showcases life in Florida from the pioneer era through the mid-20th century, and includes several restored buildings, gardens, and animal pens. After your visit to the village, take to the water and paddle downstream to see even more of the natural beauty of Shingle Creek.

Whether you’re an avid kayaker or just looking for a new way to experience the outdoors in Orlando, Shingle Creek is worthy of your attention. So pack your sunscreen, bring plenty of water, and get ready for a peaceful adventure on the water.

Orlando may be known for its amusement parks and sunny weather, but not many people are aware of the scuba diving opportunities in the area. One hidden gem for scuba diving enthusiasts is the Blue Spring State Park.

Located just a short drive north of Orlando, Blue Spring State Park is a beautiful oasis that offers crystal-clear water and an abundance of underwater wildlife. The park is most famous for its population of manatees, which can often be seen swimming through the springs during the winter months. However, scuba divers can enjoy the park all year round.

The Blue Spring State Park is a designated natural spring that pumps out over 100 gallons of water per day at a constant temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit. As the water from the spring is so warm, when it meets the colder surrounding water, it creates this layer. Divers can experience this change in temperature when diving deeper into the spring. The thermocline can also create a beautiful visual effect as the water appears to shimmer and ripple.

Diving at Blue Spring State Park is suitable for divers of all levels, from beginners to more experienced divers. The park offers guided dives and equipment rental for those who need it. The park also has a range of diving courses and certifications for those who want to improve their skills or gain a new qualification.
