Additionally, it is worth noting that the Cayman Islands use two currencies interchangeably: the Cayman Island Dollar (KYD) and the US Dollar.

Travel documents and visas

However, individuals must meet certain criteria, such as being approved by a work permit, having permission to reside permanently, or being a dependent of a licensed person.

Travel insurance

A good travel insurance policy should include trip cancellation, delay and interruption coverage; medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation coverage; and baggage coverage. These reasons typically include serious injury or unforeseen medical conditions, death of you, your travelling companion or a non-travelling family member, severe weather, unforeseen natural disasters, and legal obligations such as jury duty.

For the highest level of flexibility, you can add "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) coverage to your policy. This upgrade typically increases the price of your plan by about 50% and allows you to cancel for any reason, as long as you cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. CFAR coverage usually reimburses 50% or 75% of your trip expenses.

Travel delay insurance can compensate you for layover expenses if, for example, your connecting flight is grounded. It can also cover any prepaid trip expenses that you forfeit due to the delay. There is usually a minimum delay requirement of around 3-12 hours before you're eligible to make a claim, and there is a per-day and total maximum benefit limit per person.

Trip interruption insurance compensates you if you need to cut your trip short for a reason listed in your policy, such as illness, injury or a serious emergency. It can pay for a last-minute flight home, transportation to the airport, and any prepaid, unused and non-refundable outlays you lose due to leaving early. Interruption for Any Reason (IFAR) coverage is also available and allows you to bail on a trip early and receive partial reimbursement no matter what. This upgrade usually needs to be purchased within 15-20 days of your first trip deposit and typically adds 3-10% to your travel insurance cost.

Travel medical insurance is essential coverage if you're travelling internationally, as your US-based health insurance may not cover you outside the US. This includes Medicare, although a Medigap plan may help pay a portion of costs. Travel medical insurance can pay for medical expenses such as X-rays, lab work, medicine and hospital and doctor bills, up to the limits in your policy.

For the Cayman Islands, it is recommended that your travel insurance policy includes at least $50,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage. This will ensure that you are adequately covered if you need to be airlifted to a medical facility.

Baggage insurance pays the depreciated value of your lost, stolen or damaged luggage, up to your policy limits. Baggage delay coverage can also be useful, as it helps pay for necessities you buy to keep you comfortable until your luggage arrives, such as toiletries and a change of clothes. Baggage insurance also compensates you for the depreciated value of personal items that are lost, damaged or stolen during your trip, as long as they aren't excluded from your policy.

Tipping
