Fort McHenry National Monument: Learn about the War of 1812 and the writing of the national anthem

Fort
Source: www.npca.org

Fort McHenry National Monument, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is a site of great historical significance. It played a pivotal role in the War of 1812 and is famous for being the inspiration behind the writing of the national anthem.

During the War of 1812, British forces launched an attack on Baltimore. Fort McHenry, situated strategically at the entrance of Baltimore Harbor, was a primary defense line against the impending invasion. The fort successfully defended the city during a 25-hour bombardment from British ships. This victory became a turning point for the United States and instilled a sense of pride and patriotism among the American people.

One of the most significant events that took place at Fort McHenry was the writing of the national anthem. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and amateur poet, witnessed the bombardment of the fort by the British from a nearby ship. Throughout the night, he anxiously awaited the outcome of the battle, knowing that the fate of the city and perhaps the entire nation rested on the shoulders of the brave defenders.

As the sun rose on the morning of September 14, 1814, Key saw the American flag still flying proudly over the fort, indicating that the defenders had successfully repelled the British forces. Inspired by this sight, he penned a poem titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which later became the lyrics of the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Visiting Fort McHenry today offers an opportunity to learn about this important chapter in American history. The fort has been preserved as a national monument and museum, providing visitors with a glimpse into the past. The museum houses exhibits that detail the events leading up to the War of 1812, the battle itself, and the aftermath. You can explore artifacts, interactive displays, and multimedia presentations that bring history to life.

A highlight of any visit to Fort McHenry is witnessing a flag-raising ceremony. Every day, park rangers raise a replica of the 15-star, 15-stripe national flag, just as it would have been in Key's time. This symbolic act pays homage to the fort's role in defending the nation and reminds visitors of the brave men and women who fought for freedom.

Additionally, Fort McHenry offers various outdoor activities for those seeking adventure. The fort is situated on a picturesque peninsula, providing opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and birdwatching. The expansive grounds offer stunning views of Baltimore Harbor, making it an ideal spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty of the area.

For history enthusiasts, the nearby Baltimore Inner Harbor offers a host of attractions to explore. From the National Aquarium to the Historic Ships in Baltimore, there is no shortage of educational and fun activities to complement your visit to Fort McHenry.
