While these natural wonders are certainly a draw for tourists, Belize also boasts a rich cultural history that is just waiting to be explored. One of the best ways to delve into this history is by visiting the ancient Mayan ruins of Altun Ha.

Altun Ha is located in the northern part of Belize, about 31 miles north of Belize City. It was once a major Mayan ceremonial center and trading hub, and today, it is one of the country's most famous archaeological sites. The name "Altun Ha" means "Rock Stone Pond" in the Mayan language, and it is believed that the site was named after the nearby ancient reservoir.

The highlight of a visit to Altun Ha is undoubtedly the iconic "Jade Head," a remarkable ancient Mayan sculpture that was discovered in the Temple of the Sun. This intricately carved jade representation of the Mayan sun god is one of the largest and most significant Mayan jade artifacts ever found. It is estimated to be over 1,000 years old and weighs approximately 10 pounds. The discovery of the Jade Head brought international attention to Altun Ha and solidified its status as an important archaeological site.

In addition to the Jade Head, Altun Ha features several other impressive structures that offer insight into the daily lives and religious practices of the ancient Mayans. The largest structure, known as the Temple of the Masonry Altars, measures about 54 feet high and was likely used for ceremonial purposes. Climbing to the top of this temple provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

Another notable structure at Altun Ha is the Temple of the Green Tomb, so named for the green jade beads and ear spools that were found within it. This temple is thought to have been the final resting place of an important Mayan ruler.

Visiting Altun Ha is a fascinating journey through time, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur and sophistication of the ancient Mayan civilization. As you explore the ancient ruins, you will be transported back in time to an era where stone temples and pyramids were at the heart of a thriving civilization.
