Source: Hellenic Seaways

The Ikaria Islands, located in the Aegean Sea off of the coast of Greece, are a beautiful and historically rich area to explore. One particularly notable attraction on the islands is the Agios Kirikos Byzantine Castle, which is well worth a visit for anyone touring the region.

The castle is situated high on a rocky hill overlooking the harbor in the town of Agios Kirikos. It dates back to the Byzantine era, when the island was an important strategic location for the Empire. While today only ruins remain of the castle, it is easy to imagine the grandeur and significance of the structure.

Visitors to the castle will first notice the impressive outer walls, which are largely intact and showcase the architectural strength of the builders. Inside, the remains of the main palace are visible, as well as a number of towers, churches, and other structures. These include the Maganistri Tower, which afforded stunning views of the surrounding sea and countryside.

One of the most fascinating features of the castle is the way that it reflects the history and cultural influences of the Ikaria Islands. While the earliest parts of the castle date back to Byzantine times, the structure was expanded and updated over the centuries by various rulers and conquerors.
