Try your hand at gold panning

Try
Source: www.aljazeera.com

If you're a history buff or simply love the idea of trying your hand at gold mining, taking a trip to Madrid, NM might be just what you need! Madrid is a tiny, yet quirky and charming former coal-mining town located about 45 minutes southeast of Santa Fe, NM. Though it's no longer a bustling mining town, it's been revitalized in recent decades as a trendy artsy town with a vibrant downtown area.

But what about gold mining? You might be surprised to learn that Madrid is actually one of a handful of towns in New Mexico where you can still pan for gold. That's right - if you've ever wanted to give gold mining a try in a picturesque setting, it's possible to do so in Madrid.

First things first - where exactly can you pan for gold in Madrid? Most of the prospecting is done along the streams and riverbeds around town. One popular spot is the Hacienda de los Martinez, an 18th-century hacienda with a small museum that tells the history of Madrid and the surrounding area. Nearby, you can also try your luck at the Johnson Hydrothermal Mineral Spring, where the water is said to have healing properties. The Arroyo Cerrillos is another popular spot, located about a mile north of Madrid's downtown area.

Before you start panning, it's important to note that you'll need some basic equipment. A simple gold pan is the most important tool you'll need, along with a shovel and a bucket to carry your materials. You can buy pans and other mining supplies at some of the local shops downtown, or bring your own equipment if you have it.

So, how does gold panning actually work? The basic idea is to find a spot along the stream or river that looks promising - perhaps an area with exposed bedrock or gravel. Then, you'll scoop up some material into your pan and swirl it around in the water. This helps to separate the heavier materials (like gold) from lighter ones like sand and gravel. With some patience and practice, you'll hopefully start to see shiny flecks of gold appear in your pan!

It's important to remember that gold mining in Madrid is strictly a recreational activity - you're not going to strike it rich overnight. But if you're looking for a fun and unique way to pass the time in this charming town, gold panning is definitely worth a try. Plus, who knows? You just might find a tiny speck of gold to take home as a souvenir.
