When planning a winter hike in the Mammoth Lakes area, it is important to be well-prepared and aware of the unique challenges that come with winter hiking. Here are some tips and recommendations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • Check the Weather: Before heading out on a winter hike, always check the weather conditions and avalanche forecasts. Snowstorms can quickly roll in, making trails unsafe or even inaccessible. It is always better to be safe than sorry, so adjust your plans accordingly if needed.
  • Dress Appropriately: Layering is key when it comes to winter hiking. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your body. Add an insulating middle layer, such as a fleece or down jacket, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Don't forget to wear warm socks, gloves, a hat, and sturdy waterproof boots.
  • Use Proper Equipment: Depending on the trail conditions, you may need snowshoes or crampons to navigate through deep snow or icy areas. Trekking poles can also provide extra stability and balance on slippery terrain. It is essential to have a map, compass, and a GPS device to ensure you stay on track and find your way back.
  • Stay Hydrated and Nourished: It is easy to get dehydrated in cold weather, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout your hike. Pack high-energy snacks and a warm drink to keep your fuel levels up. It is also a good idea to carry a small stove and warm food in case you need to make an emergency stop.
  • Hike with a Group or Notify Someone: Always hike with a partner or in a group during winter months. If that is not possible, make sure to inform someone about your plans, including your intended route and expected return time. In case of an emergency, they will be able to alert the authorities if you do not check in.

As for the best winter hiking trails in the Mammoth Lakes area, there are a few options to consider:
