Source: velvetescape.com

Nestled in a narrow canyon in the southwestern desert of Jordan lies one of the world's most impressive ancient wonders - Petra. The city of Petra is an architectural masterpiece of the Nabateans, who carved stunning temples, tombs, and dwellings out of sandstone cliffs over 2000 years ago. Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts thousands of visitors every year. If you're planning a trip to the Middle East, make sure not to miss exploring this mesmerizing ancient city of Petra in Jordan.

To explore Petra, you need to enter the site through the Siq, a narrow gorge that eroded through the mountains. The Siq is a 1.2-kilometer-long canyon with walls that tower up to 80 meters high. As you walk through the Siq, the sunlight filters through the narrow opening above and dapples the ground in shades of pink and orange. The experience is truly breathtaking.

As you reach the end of the Siq, the Treasury comes into view. The Treasury is undoubtedly Petra's most iconic monument, with its intricate details and stunning pillars cut into the rock face. It was initially built as a tomb for the Nabatean king, but it's also rumored to have hidden treasures belonging to them. A few other unmissable attractions in Petra are the Royal Tombs, the Monastery, and the Roman Theater.

Another great way to explore Petra is on a donkey or a horseback ride. It's an unforgettable experience, as you get to witness the city's architectural marvels from above, just as the Nabataeans did. Also, make sure you take a break from exploring and have a cup of tea with a local Bedouin, who has lived in the area for generations.

Petra is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild. Make sure to carry comfortable shoes as you have to walk through the narrow canyons and climb a few steep slopes of staircases to reach the monuments. If you're planning a day trip, it's worth hiring a guide who can give historical insights and take you on a less-crowded route.

In conclusion, Petra is an incredible ancient city that should be on every traveler's bucket list. It's an awe-inspiring and humbling experience, standing in front of the incredible monuments that have stood the test of time. Visiting Petra is not just about discovering a rich history, but also about immersing yourself in the beauty of nature and culture.
