Visit the Milam County Jail Museum

Visit
Source: Wikipedia

If you are traveling through the small town of Rockdale, TX, you might be surprised to find a unique attraction waiting for you. The Milam County Jail Museum, located in downtown Rockdale, is a fascinating historical site that is worth a visit.

The Milam County Jail was built in 1895 and designed by architect Andrew J. Bryan. The building served as the county jail until 1978, when a new facility was constructed. However, the old jail was preserved and turned into a museum in 1986.

Visitors to the museum can explore the cellblocks, exercise yard, and sheriff's living quarters. The museum's exhibits showcase the history of the jail and the county, with displays featuring artifacts from the past. Some of the highlights include old jail uniforms, weapons, and photographs of former inmates.

One of the most interesting features of the museum is the "hanging tower" on the top floor of the building. In the early days of the jail, prisoners were executed by hanging, and the tower was used for this purpose. Today, the tower is kept intact as a reminder of the jail's dark past.

Another fascinating aspect of the museum is the "escape tunnel." In 1923, four prisoners used spoons and a broom handle to dig a tunnel out of the jail. Although they were later caught and returned to the jail, the tunnel remains as a testament to their daring escape.

The Milam County Jail Museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday and offers guided tours. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. The museum is a unique and interesting destination for history buffs or anyone looking for a quirky attraction to visit in Rockdale, TX.
