The Tongariro River is a world-renowned fly fishing destination, attracting anglers of all skill levels. It is particularly famous for its population of rainbow and brown trout. These fish, known for their impressive size and fighting ability, make for an exhilarating fishing experience.

The fishing season on the Tongariro River runs from October to April, with the peak season being between December and February. This period coincides with the spawning season, when large schools of trout migrate upstream to lay their eggs. This makes it the ideal time for anglers to try their luck at catching a trophy-sized fish.

The river itself offers a variety of fishing spots, each with its own unique characteristics. The lower reaches of the Tongariro River, closer to Lake Taupo, are ideal for beginners and those looking for a more relaxed fishing experience. The middle and upper reaches of the river, on the other hand, offer more challenging waters and larger fish.

One of the most popular fishing methods used on the Tongariro River is nymph fishing. This involves using artificial flies designed to imitate the aquatic nymphs that trout feed on. Anglers cast their flies upstream and allow them to drift naturally in the current, enticing the trout to strike. The Tongariro Roll Cast is a specialized casting technique often used to overcome the swift currents of the river.

In addition to the Tongariro River, there are several other nearby rivers and streams that also offer excellent fly fishing opportunities. Some of these include the Tauranga-Taupo River, the Whanganui River, and the Rangitikei River. These rivers are less crowded than the Tongariro and provide anglers with a chance to experience the beauty and tranquility of New Zealand's wilderness.

For those who are new to fly fishing or would like to improve their skills, there are a number of local guides and outfitters available in Turangi. These professionals have intimate knowledge of the rivers and can provide valuable insights and tips to help maximize the fishing experience.
