Scuba diving at Eagle's Nest

Source: National Geographic
Characteristic Description
NameEagles Nest - Florida Cave Diving
TypeNature preserve in Hernando County, Florida
Rating / Review count4.7 / 61
Address7199 Cortez Blvd, Spring Hill, FL 34607

Pasco County is located in Florida and is known for a variety of fun activities. One such activity is scuba diving at Eagles Nest, which is located in the county. Scuba diving at Eagles Nest has become a popular pastime and is a must-try for anyone who loves diving. It is one of the most unique scuba diving experiences you can have in the state.

Eagles Nest is a sinkhole located in the central part of Pasco County, just fifteen minutes north of Tampa. It is known to be one of the deepest freshwater caves in the United States. To be precise, it is a vertical cave that descends almost 310 feet below the surface. Scuba divers are allowed to descend to 140 feet, from where they can explore the underground tunnels and chambers of the cave.

Before you plan your trip to Eagles Nest, there are a few things you should know. First and foremost, scuba diving at Eagles Nest requires an advanced level of diving skill. Only seasoned divers with the appropriate certifications are allowed to dive here. The extreme depth and overhead environment make it a technical dive that requires thorough preparation and training. If you're a beginner, you need to get adequate training and certification before attempting to dive here.

There are a few distinct features of Eagles Nest that make it an exceptional dive site. One such feature is the halocline, which is a phenomenon caused by the mixing of the salinity of the freshwater with that of the surrounding saltwater. This creates a layer of blurry water that can distort your vision. Experienced divers love diving through the halocline and experiencing the unique visual effects it creates.

Another feature of Eagles Nest that divers love is the hydrogen sulfide cloud that forms at around 90 feet below the surface. The cloud is created by sulfur dioxide gas that is released when organic matter decomposes in the cave. The sulfide cloud is toxic, so divers are not advised to descend below it or to spend too much time in it. However, the sight of the cloud is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Overall, scuba diving at Eagles Nest is a thrilling and challenging experience that you won't forget. The unique environment of the cave, combined with the technical skills required, makes it a favorite among experienced divers. However, it is not a dive site for beginners. If you're an experienced diver, plan your trip to Pasco County and dive deep into the waters of Eagles Nest for an unforgettable scuba diving experience.
